Point Turton and Innes National Park

Tuesday 26th April 2022

We left Edithburgh today for Point Turton on the western side of the Yorke Pennisula.

It’s was a very quick trip of around 45kn and with a quick stop in a small town called Yorketown, we arrived at around lunch time.

We were placed in a site between two permanent structures which we originally thought was going to be crap. It was wonderful!! They acted like a wind break and made our site the least cramped in the whole park.

We had a walk around the jetty in the afternoon but mainly played and relaxed around the caravan.

We had a resident bunny rabbit that visited every morning and evening the length of our stay.

Wednesday 27th April 2022

Our 9th anniversary today and we were planning a trip into the eastern side of Innes National Park. It is at the southern end of the Yorke Peninsula.

We first drove to the most south western tip called West Cape. There was a spectacular lookout over the western bays.

West Cape lighthouse and Wedge Island in the distance
West Bay and Groper Bay with Pondalowie Bay in the back.

We then drove to Historic Inneston for a walk back in time.

Inneston was a company town that grew from 1913 to 1930 – The Yorke Peninsula Plaster Company. They mined gypsum and housed 100 men and 30 women in its 36 buildings. It was completely isolated from any other town and it’s contact with other towns were by sea.

Gypsum is a soft, white mineral and when crushed, refined and dried it sets into a hard concrete/ plaster. Rock gypsum is formed by evaporation of salt water in stranded arms of the sea.

Inneston Lake

After our walk we drove to Cape Spencer Lighthouse. Cape Spencer is the south eastern most tip of the peninsula.

We then drove to Stenhouse Bay for lunch near the jetty.

We drove from here to Marion Bay and then back to Point Turton. On the way we saw old man emu and his four emu kiddies.

We strolled along the coast before dinner time.

After a long day driving the National Park we retired to the caravan for the evening.

Thursday 28th April 2022

It was drizzly, windy and cold today. We remained caravan bound playing, doing art and enjoying each other’s company.

Tomorrow

We move to Adelaide for 6 nights.
