Eungella, Platypus and Attack Of The Rooster

Tuesday 13th April 2021

We had a unbroken sleep last night, it was devine. We woke up to a partly cloudy day today. We had our fresh eggs for breakfast, yummy. We packed our stuff and headed off around 830am.

Eungella National Park

Eungella, meaning “Land of the clouds”, is a township nestled on the edge of the Clarke Range at the end of the Pioneer Valley 80 km west of Mackay.

It is considered to be the longest continual stretch of sub-tropical rainforest in Australia. It has a dam that supplies water for Collinsville, Mackay and Moranbah.

Broken River

We drove through the town and through to the National Park. We stopped at a campground called Fern Flat, to walk the Broken River.

Madeline on the platypus

We walked along the river, stopping at key viewing platforms to try to get a glimpse of a platypus.

Broken River

We spotted two platypuses in the water at two separate sites.

Platypus

We stayed watching come up for air and diving under for a while. It was a magnificent sight. Eva had never seen a platypus before, and didn’t know they were so small.

Sky Window

We then drove to the Sky Window Lookout. It was a short walk on a footpath with no barricade.

Cattle Creek

We drove down the mountain to a little picnic area called Cattle Creek.

The creek was running with rapids. While Jason went to wet his line, Madeline and Eva read books.

Platypus Beach – Mirani

We travelled further east to a small town called Mirani. Eva and Madeline went to the playground while Jason checked out the fishing at Platypus Beach.

Pleystowe

We arrived back at the van around 3pm. Jason rewired one of the fans and tested the Anderson plug. Unfortunately the multimeter stopped working, so now we need to get new fuses.

Eva went to return one of the egg collecting colanders and was subsequently attacked by the rooster on her leg. Madeline went to tell the rooster off.

Jason and Madeline went to jump on the trampoline.

We then cooked baked chicken in the Ziggy. We had a chat with Aunty Bec, before retiring for the night.

Tomorrow

Madeline and Eva are going to the Mackay sugar land playground and back to the lagoon.

Jason plans to do some fishing in the morning.
