Wednesday 26th May 2021
We had a good night sleep last night. We woke up around 620am.
We had a visit from Babcia this morning who did some playing with Madeline.
Eva made pizza dough for tonight and Friday nights dinner.
We had lunch and then got ourselves ready to see some of the coastal sights.
Flagstaff Hill

We drove up the lookout on Flagstaff Hill.

The flagstaff was first erected on the highest part of the hill in March 1880 and flags were raised to inform the town of shipping arrivals and later of cyclones. It was a busy port with supplies arriving frequently for inland mining fields. In those days, the hill, locally known as Billy Goat Hill, was bare of vegetation because of the large population of wild goats, so the signal flags were easily visible from Macrossan Street.

Rex Smeal Park
We drove down to the coastal area at Rex Smeal Park.
At the time of his death in 1976, Rex Smeal was Council’s overseer and was regarded as one of Australia’s best builders of wooden bridges, responsible for the iconic Digger’s Bridge in Mowbray and Poletti’s Bridge off Syndicate Rd which have stood the test of time.
He tragically died from injuries as a result of a head-on collision that occurred while on his way to help his communities when a massive flood caused the Daintree Ferry to break away.

Port Douglas Jetty
December 1st 1877, Port Douglas became an official Port of Entry for the levy of duties.
A stone Jetty was constructed from the shoreline into the sea. By 1889, the rock platform had been extended and formed a total length of 70m.

Town Centre
After exploring the coastal area, we wandered down the Main Street and did some window shopping.
Tomorrow
We leave Babcia and Dziadzio to relax and are heading off to Mossman Gorge for the morning.
