Fishing, Swimming and Relaxing

Wednesday 17th February 2021

Today we planned to stay at Kingfisher Island resort.

We had a slow start but moved to the pool around 9am for a swim. We spent 3 hours by the pool this morning.

This afternoon we went down to the wharf to let Madeline use her fishing rod a bit. She was not successful this time.

The weather has been great. Despite it saying 70% chance of rain, it has only really been spitting intermittently.

Fraser Island

Fraser Island stretches over 123 kilometres in length and 22 kilometres at its widest point. With an area of 184 000 hectares it is

It’s the only place on Earth where tall rainforests grow on sand dunes at elevations of more than 200 metres.

It also has half the world’s perched lakes – lakes formed when depressions in dunes fill permanently with rainwater.

Fraser Island’s World Heritage listing ranks it with Australia’s Uluru, Kakadu and the Great Barrier Reef.

The earliest known name of the island is ‘K’gari’ in the Butchulla people’s language (pronounced ‘gurri’). It means paradise.

After European colonisation it was called ‘Great Sandy Island’ then ‘Fraser Island’ due to the stories disseminated by Eliza Fraser about her 1836 shipwreck on the island.

Tomorrow

We plan on driving to Lake McKenzie which is 7km southeast from Kingfisher Bay Resort.
