An axe, more rain and an awesome park

Tuesday 2nd February 2021

Today we woke up to rain. Had another very rough night with Maddie. Starting to expect poor sleep until she gets use to the caravan life. We woke at 730 and were happy we decided to pack the chairs, outdoor mat and awning up the night before.

Breakfast done. Caravan prepped. Hitched the van and off we went at 915am.

Exiting Coopernook State Forest

We travelled to Kew 30min North of Coopernook.

Kew, NSW

A small town on the mid-north coast of NSW. Known as the home of Nancy Bird Walton and the big axe.

In the late 1800s turpentine tree was sought after for wharf building and Cedar Creek became the target of what was known as the Turpentine Tramway.

The Federal Timber Company was established and Mr McSweeny built the first saw mill in 1895 at Homedale 5km south of Kew.

He then constructed a six kilometre tramway north and then north-east into turpentine country.

Kew mill and the timber company went into liquidation in 1898 and the tramway ceased to be used in the early 1900s.

The big axe signifies the importance of the timber industry to Kew.

The Big Axe

Pit stop

We had a quick browse of the information centre at Kew before filling up the water tanks with some help.

Madeline managed to slip over and wet her whole outfit. A 30min stop ended up being over 1 hr. She’s fine, btw.

Southwest Rocks, NSW

We arrived at our NRMA caravan park in Southwest Rocks.

We had lunch and Eva headed out the the shops to get this weeks groceries.

Jason and Madeline stayed to explore the park, by that we mean to play equipment.

We spent the evening checking out our new accommodation for 3 nights and had dinner.

Overall today was awesome. Great history lessons and beautiful scenery.

Pirate Island at NRMA Southwest Rocks

Tomorrow we are planning to visit Arakoon, Trial Bay Jail and do some trekking through Arakoon NP.

See you soon.
