Wednesday 3rd February 2021
After yet another crappy night sleep we awoke to a sunny day at around 730am.
Today we were going to visit Trial Bay Goal and Arakoon National Park. We packed our swimmers, lunch and selfie stick and drove to the Goal.
Just as we exited the car we saw this little critter crawl along the passenger door and duck into the car. Eva screeched when she saw it. We spent a few minutes turning the car over looking for it.

Trial Bay Goal
Built between 1877-1886 for prisoners who were sent to help construct a breakwater for the treacherous waters of Trial Bay. It is the only goal, in the history of NSW, specifically built to supply labour for public works.
After 10 years the breakwater measured less than one-seventh of its intended length. This was because progress was slowed by storms, gale force winds and washaways.
By 1903 the breakwater construction was abandoned and the goal was closed.
Goal reinstated for internees
At the onset of WW1 the goal was repurposed to intern ‘enemy aliens.’ It held over 500 men of German decent who were either Australian born with German citizenship or visiting.
By 1918 the goal was decommissioned and is now only a site for historical purposes.

Monument hill
A monument constructed by German internees as a tribute to their fellow companions who died while interned at Trial Bay Goal.

Arakoon National Park

We spent the remainder of the morning on the beach at Trial Bay. We built sandcastle, swam in the water and walked the beach.

Afternoon was pool side
After returning to the van for a spot of lunch, we did a load of washing and spent another 45 min on the jumping pillow.
We then spent the afternoon lazing about in the pools at the holiday park.
We were visited at our van by kangaroos, incredibly angry March flies and another goanna.

Tomorrow we are going to Southwest rocks proper to explore Horseshoe Bay beach, Back creek and Brighton Bridge.
