Bumpy ride, lookouts and waterfalls

Sunday 31st January 2021

Today we were awoken by Maddie at 4am, cold but refusing her blankets. She came to our bed where she slept until 730am.

We prepped lunches had breakfast and headed out to Coorabakh National Park.

We travelled from our van site up and down a very windy, steep dirt road. The ride was bumpy with pot holes and areas of road that were washed out.

We collected a few spiders on the way.

Coorabakh National Park

Shaped by early volcanic activity this 18 square kilometre area features mountains, caves, low streams and 18 different ecosystems.

Newbys Creek and Caves

Our first stop was at Newby’s Creek. It was a pristine freshwater creek running crystal clear water. It was a beautiful place to take in the cool air of the National Park and the stunning watercourse.

Stars Creek Picnic Area

Unfortunately the rainforest boardwalk was taped off. So it was a quick visit and back in the car.

Big Nellie

We drove up out of the creek beds up a little to rest area and picnic spot at the base of Big Nellie.

Big Nellie is a 500m tall volcanic rock plug and is one of the main attractions at the National Park.

Flat rock lookout

There’s nothing flat about the 500m drop. The viewing platform overlooks Coxcomb, Goonook and Killabakh nature reserves.

We had lunch on the viewing platform and enjoyed watching birds flying at the heights of this lookout.

Waitui falls

A short trip out of the National Park to Waitui. Many cars parked here. A steep decent by foot and you see this….

Waitui Falls

A fabulous swimming hole of fresh running water. Absolutely beautiful end to our day-trip today.

Lazy afternoon

After a big morning we relaxed at the van for the afternoon. Jason rigged up the fishing gear for tomorrow.

Madeline couldn’t wait to get her line wet.

Practicing in a bucket

Today was amazing. We are planning to do some fishing and swimming tomorrow and look forward to showing you more of our adventure, our final day at Coopernook.
